What would you do?

Would you quietly sit there and let her do the (in your opinion) wrong thing? Would you let her marry the guy? Would you shut your mouth?
Or would you stand up and talk to your friend, even if that could mean the end of your friendship?

What would your decision be?

Sometimes, standing up and voicing your opinion can be very much NOT appreciated, but in the end could turn out to be the right thing.

Tikkun olam (Hebrew: תיקון עולם‎) is a Hebrew phrase that means “repairing the world.” In Judaism, the concept of tikkun olam originated in the early rabbinic period.

Dr. Charlotte Knobloch, whom we met yesterday morning, left a lasting impression within me. She herself is a survivor of the Shoa (or a word better known to Germans … the Holocaust). She told us her story of growing up in a Nazi Germany, how hard it was for her, and how she managed to survive the horrors of that time. AND she said, that today she feels at home in Germany, that she actualy feels German. And this after all the things that Germans did to the Jewish people (and to many onthers) during World War II.

This left me speechless.

Dr. Knobloch mentioned that in her opinion teaching “the young” and encouraging a dialogue that everyone can learn from, is one of the most important things that should happen between Germans and the Jewish people nowadays.

I fully agree.

There are so many things that I have learned during this trip already.
Things aboout current events that are “public knowledge” … if you know where to search.
Things that you would not be aware of, if you only read German media.
Things that shape your opinion. If you are lucky enough to know them.

So … what can we do … what can I do to change that?

When this trip is over, I’ll create a website with the goal to foster opinion exchange between young Jewish and Germans. A website to give answers to questions on the past. But also to give answers to questions of current international affairs.

Dialogue is the only way to understand each other. The only way to tikkun olam.
So I hope that many of my fellow Third Generation Initiative participants will join the discussion.

How would you describe what Germans are today … and most of all … why they are the way they are? And could you please at the same time explain why Israel is the way it is?

We heard a speaker yesterday that could do exactly that.
Let me just take one of the statements that really stuck in my mind.

What did Germans and Israeli learn from World War II?
Israeli: We will never again be victims.
Germans: We will never again be perpetrators.

And rightly so!

Those three simple lines do explain a lot about why Germany is so passive sometimes in its international relations, especially when military force comes into play. And it explains pretty well Israels standpoint.

For today I will just leave you with this statement to think about it yourself.
I think it is well worth it.

We started the Sunday program with a brunch at Villa Flora in Munich and met (besides the members of the group) some interesting guests. Michael Thoss (Allianz Cultural Foundation), Saba Farzan (Iranian-born journalist), Eva Fabian (from the European Januzs Korczak Acadeny), Dr. Elif Cindik (Psychiatrist and besides that Deputyhead of the Turkish Community in Germany), Arjan Dhupia (Germany Close Up).

We discussed with this panel the situation of contemporary Germany and how the Germans nowadays deal with “integration”. It was highly interesting to hear the opinions of this very diverse group. It was especially intersting to hear about the situation in Iran and that Germany is obviously THE biggest trade partner of Iran. Call me naive, but I was not aware of this rather disturbing fact.

The day went on … fully packed with interesting facts about Jewish life in Germany and especially in Munich (thanks to Gerd Modert for the very intersting tour through Munich). In the evening we met Dr. Michael Brenner (Professor of Jewish History and Culture, University of Munich). This rounded the day and sent us to bed completely wasted and tired, loaded with facts and thoughts.

I am very much looking forward to the rest of the week!

Dialog im Dunkeln

Meine fünf Kollegen sind genau so still wie ich. Sicherlich versuchen auch sie sich verzweifelt zu orientieren. Niemand sagt etwas. Ich habe nicht die leiseste Ahnung, ob überhaupt noch jemand da ist.
Ich fühle mich verlassen.
Einsam.
Hilflos.
Es ist, als würde ich nicht mehr existieren.

„Hallo? Wo seid ihr?“, krächze ich unsicher.
„Ich stehe auf einer Brücke.“
„Ich an einem Busch.“
„Ich bin neben Dir!“
Eine Hand tastet nach mir.
Ich bin nicht mehr nicht allein.

Wir sind bei „Dialog im Dunkeln“. Für zweieinhalb Stunden, mit einer kleinen Gruppe und einer „wirklich blinden“ Trainerin – eingesperrt in einer Art „Hindernisparcour“. Ein Abenteuerspielplatz ohne Licht. Zu Gast im „Dialogue Training Center“ der Allianz Global Investors, in München.

Zuerst durchqueren wir einen Wald. Das verrät mir meine Nase. Da steht mir ein Baum im Weg, dort stoße ich mir das Schienbein an einer Parkbank. Dann falle ich fast über ein Vogelhaus. Ich komme mir vor, wie ein kleines Kind, das laufen lernt. Wir sollen unseren Kollegen die Dinge zeigen, die wir entdeckt haben. Ich lotse Vera mit stetigem Plappern zu mir. Zeige ihr die Blockhütte, die ich gerade entdeckt habe. Oder, was ich für eine Blockhütte halte. Vielleicht ist es auch nur ein Holzstapel. Ich habe nicht die geringste Ahnung.

Dann müssen wir eine verkehrsreiche Straße überqueren. Zum Glück ist die nur simuliert. Ich habe das Gefühl, ich würde sonst unter dem nächsten Auto enden. Das Geräusch der sich nähernden Straßenbahn lässt trotzdem meinen Atem stocken. Meine Beine bewegen sich nicht mehr. Ich schwitze. Warum ist normales Laufen plötzlich so anstrengend?
Nach gefühlten 10 Minuten haben wir die Straße endlich hinter uns gelassen.

Mit der Zeit finden wir uns in der Dunkelheit besser zurecht. Unsere Sinne wachen langsam auf. Die Trainerin stellt uns immer schwierigere Aufgaben, welche die Kommunikation in unserer Gruppe auf die Probe stellen. Wie beschreibe ich meinen Kollegen eine geometrische Figur, die ich in meinen Händen halte? Wie können wir die Teile vergleichen, ohne sie dem anderen in die Hand zu geben? Wie liest man einen dreidimensionalen Bauplan, bei dem man nicht weiß, wo unten und oben ist? Wie bildet man aus einem Wust von zwanzig „Magnetbuchstaben“ sinnvolle Worte, wenn man sie nicht sehen kann?

Nach zweieinhalb Stunden müssen wir wieder ins Licht.
Ich habe viel gelernt. Aber drei Dinge bleiben mir ganz besonders im Gedächtnis haften:

• Ich kann mich auf meine Kollegen verlassen, auch wenn es schwierig wird.
• Wir können Dinge schaffen, die wir für unmöglich halten.
• Wer nichts sagt, existiert nicht!

Bei http://www.iplantatree.org habe ich heute 100 Bäume gepflanzt, in Göritz. Dort entsteht eine “Erstaufforstung”.

Schon ein Baum reicht. Mach mit!

Es ist mir doch vollkommen gleichgültig, ob er Wulff, Gauck oder Mickey Maus heisst … er soll ein Vorbild für die Deutschen sein … er soll uns repräsentieren … und er soll bei Bedarf der Regierung oder der Opposition den Kopf gerade rücken.

Richard von Weizsäcker, das war ein Bundespräsident nach meinem Geschmack. Seine Parteizugehörigkeit hat er nicht raushängen lassen, er wurde von Politikern jedweder Schattierung anerkannt. Klare Worte und absolut integer. So einen Bundespräsidenten wünsche ich mir.

Dieses Sandkastengezanke, wie es momentan abläuft … das ist eher beschämend.

Jetzt mal im Ernst … es ist ja nett, dass sich die selbsternannten “Schützer der Menscheit” so ins Zeug legen, um die bösen bösen Datenkraken zur Umkehr zu bewegen … aber haben die schon mal gefragt, ob ich das überhaupt will?

Mir ist es lieber ich bekomme bei Google eine Werbung für Apple angezeigt, als für Dell. Ich sehe gerne iPhone-Promotions, während mir Android absolut gestohlen bleiben kann. Ich brauche keine rosa Plüschpantoffeln, aber eine Sportwagen Werbung nehme ich gerne.

Das geht allerdings nur, wenn man meine Vorlieben kennt. Und ich bin gerne bereit ein wenig meiner “Privatsphäre” zu opfern, um dafür im Gegenzug nicht mit sinnloser Werbung zugemüllt zu werden, die mich eh nicht interessiert. Ich lasse mich von meinen Lieblingsunternehmen gerne “abholen”. Niemand zwingt mich, auf die Werbung zu klicken, oder?

Auch mit den Datenkraken bin ich noch ein mündiger Bürger und kann selbst entscheiden. Nur muss ich mich nicht mehr durch unnötigen Müll wühlen.
